April Ross
April Ross is one of the few female beach volleyball players to win medals at more than one Olympics. In Tokyo during the next few days, she'll be aiming to claim her third Olympic medal along with first-time Olympian Alix Klineman. Ross hopes to win an Olympic first gold medal, but she is also aiming to win greater. It could be the last chance she'll ever have at age 39. Nevertheless she is confident that winning the gold medal is at hand. Ross on NBC Boston, said that if the team plays very well, or even at all, they can earn a gold. That's why I'm taking the chance as well. Ross was born in 1982 in Costa Mesa California where she lived with her parents and her sister. At Newport Harbor High School, she played in a variety of sports. Her pre-athletic career comprised indoor volleyball as well as basketball, running and track. When she played in the final sport she stood out. According to her bio, she was a middle blocker and outside hitter on the volleyball court throughout her time in high school. Gatorade Circle of Champions named her the national Player 1999. Also, she won the 2000 Orange County Athlete of the Award for volleyball. Ross and Klineman may have started working together in 2017, but Ross had already been a seasoned athlete at the beach prior to when they joined forces. In fact, she won multiple major tournaments using two partners, one of whom is the volleyball legend. From 2007 to 2013 she played with Jennifer Kessy, who is now her coach. Together together with Kessy, Ross won a World Title in 2009 when she competed on the international circuit. They were awarded a silver medal during the 2012 Olympic Games held in London. Misty May, Kerri Walsh and Kerri Jennings were the group to beat out for gold. Ross Jennings took over for May-Treanor when she retired. They took home the bronze medal in beach volleyball at the Rio Olympics 2016. Ross was a college athlete at USC Trojans prior to beginning the start of her professional career. She was a player in high school and in some years before she hit the beach as a professional. Ross had an impressive run through the NCAA tournament. She was an All-American as well as Pac-10 freshman of the year in the year 2000, a young freshman. Her Trojans were also able to make it to the Final Four. Her personal tragedy was a crushing loss in her sophomore season, but she still repeated her place as an All-American. Over the course of her final two seasons she led the Trojans to the top of the mountain and won consecutive national titles. In 2003-2004, Ross was named as the most successful female volleyball player on the collegiate scene in the United States through The Honda Sports Award. Ross was a student of International Relations at USC. Margie Ross was never able to see her daughter reach the top in beach volleyball. Ross's mom passed away due to breast cancer when she was in her sophomore year at USC. She continues to remember her deceased parent close and close.
